HOW ARE YOU TRACKING YOUR HANDICAP?

There has been a significant number of questions about handicapping and the different systems and sources. Here in the USA, there is a system promoted by the USGA called the GHIN system. I have been around golf operations for some time and believe this is the most recognized system currently in use. I know that licensing by USGA is available to country clubs and golf courses to maintain their memberships stats. But there are a great number of golfers who are not members of those organized facilities and on occasion are Guests at membership events. Many have GHIN numbers as they come from other facilities that conscribe to the GHIN system. Of these people without GHIN numbers and who use other systems are with some skepticism and scrutinized by the organizing committees totry and keep their events fair. This is a good effort but with the advent of a new tournament system, Golf Genius in 2019 to replace the older TTP system, it has become easier to setup with GHIN as the common handicap system. This is not to say that other systems are bad, just that they are questioned heavily. There is why I would recommend every golfer getting a GHIN number that is now also using the World Handicap System. The use of Golf Genius has been such and great help to local tournament operations.

Benefits GHIN are with USGA help, providing a pretty universal system of handicap scoring for everyone. But one thing that is problematic is that handicaps are kept by a committee at the respective clubs and without membership where do you go to get it. Fortunately, here in the State of Texas you can get a standing GHIN number through the Texas State Golf Association as a Medalist. I am sure that there are similar programs in most of the states but you will have to check with your state association. This allows me to enter golf tournaments with a lot fewer questions.

Recognition by others is the greatest drawback to other handicap systems around. The biggest benefit for the local courses and country clubs is the integrity of the handicap review committees which are a great part of the system. Having signatures by another member that you play with keep the system intact and promotes the honesty that the game of golf is revered for. I will concede that there are ringers and people to play the system, but we all hope that every golfer plays to the “Bobby Jones” level of integrity.

I have recently discovered that effective July 21, 2021 a new benefit has been added to the GHIN system which now includes a Integrated GPS Tracking Systems within GHIN. With the recent advent of the use of measuring devices on the golf course during play GHIN this added GPS tracking system is similar many on the market. The system can keep your score during you round, give you stats on how you played via a “shots gained system” and will then post your score to your scoring history which overnight will update you handicap index. I have found that it is very similar to the GolfPadGPS system. There are some minor differences but on the face is works like the manual tracking system of GolfPad.

There have been other posts on this website which address several of these topics like “Should I use GPS or Laser”, “What are the best GPS and Laser equipment”, and other factors which golfers should become familiar with.

There are multiple opinions out there about the various subject relating to play and each person that reads this posting should leave some comment for the rest of the world to review.

Thanks for reading and hope what you find here will be of benefit to your golf game.
