Best Training Aid Carried by Most Golf Professionals

In the current era of home bound golfers we have all been on a search for the best products to help improve our game. Golf.com published a recent article on some very common training aids used by my professionals. Prominent in the article are items used by Dustin Johnson who in the past has a problem with putting. The aid of emphasis is a alignment aid for putting to help your stroke. I, like Dustin have putting problems, but the aids shown have helped him improve and are helping me improve.

Experience has shown me that a Putting Mirror has been a good purchase. There are multiple items out there on the market to chose from so you can choose what is best. I suggest that you visit the website GolfTrainingAids.com which is run and recommended by a friend, Dr. Gary Wiren, and his son. You can find the link at the top of CleekGeekGolf.com home page to reach the this website. This is an item I highly recommend as it was used during my college days learning the various aspects of the golf game. The good part is that this item is relatively inexpensive.

Another product, though more expensive, you will find at GolfTrainingAids.com is the Putting Matt. This is a pre-printed, auto-return matt that has very true green feel and alignment aids which work well with the mirror. These two items enjoined for your practice should help improve your putting.

Do On-line fitting systems really help?

Now that we are out and playing golf again it is time to discuss the need for your equipment evaluation. Club fitting has become available to everyone in golf. You may choose to go to OEM websites (e.g. Titleist, Callaway, Taylormade, etc.) for their product matching or you can go to individual components (i.e. Shaft manufacturers and retailers). the fitting centers run by a myriad of great professionals (e.g. Cool Clubs and Club Champions, etc.) but there are some good on-line options. Latest to enter the fray is TrueGolfFit (see link below) which is powered by MySpyGolf. I would suggest that this isn’t more for the techno-geek types. It will give you a good look at the wide range of products available in the product market. Player would have an idea of their game and what would be want to do to seek improvement. This will be the starting point for those who want a full market comparison. When you read the article you will find that this is not the end of the line to game improvement. For the Minimum Fee of $9.00 for each output it is well worth the price.

Recommendation for you by trying TrueGolfFit is to be sure to keep the data you input into the system for future use. This will allow you to change details which may give you different information. Even after obtaining the recommended product from this site it may be best to see a good club fitter to tweak the last ounce of improvement out of the options.

How much you want to invest in the game will really drive your benefit from the fitting process. The minimum fee here will be much less than the on-site fitting you will experience which will run anywhere from $150.00 to upward $350 dependent on the depth of your investigation and time.

Personally, don’t pass this up process up as it is well worth the time to read and experience. Also see on this website you will find a heavy endorsement of spending the additional money for the on-site work.

Bonded Hosel vs Adjustable

The following story is from a great source (see Logo upper left and click link below) and my comments on this are for those which have a technical interest in club making and fitting. There is a special inside look at the different designs that effect the proper fitting of golf clubs. This inside look is about Callaway golf and how they address the variables for their different staffers, non-staffers and pass along those adjustments and variables to the public.

http://Bonded Hosel VS Adjustable, Whats the Difference

As a golf club maker I have experienced the variables. Most of the bonded marker’s products are not adjustable (i.e. bendable) so if it is necessary to adjust for the game of a player I usually have to  advise to purchase a separate club. Personally, I have a bonded hosel in my hybrid and have found that by relocating the weights I can affect bias and I have not been required to adjust the lie.

Be advised that not everyone is required to make the adjustments the same way it is explained in the related story.  Some manufactures (very few) have provided the necessary length in the hosel area to allow for bending. The older methods of weight distribution are usually still available in todays clubs but finding a good club maker with the necessary skills to produce the right adjustments is still pretty hard.

Hopefully this will give you some insight into the technical expertise of your local club maker and help you improve your game.

AXIS1 PUTTER REVIEW

UPDATE: 2020-05-29  With a little more exposure and practice, I have gotten a little better. I feel that my problem is more with the read than the equipment. I have however noticed that I am closer to the hole on the miss affected by distance. Recommendation is to stay with it and get a refresher course from your local PGA Pro on the mechanics.

Here is a review on the my recently received new AXIS1 ‘Joey” putter. I have been able to try the putter on the golf course and for a few drills at home and find that this is a very good product. I have tried about 6 different types of putter during my time playing the game and find this one the easiest to get used to.

For a good discussion you need to see the related video review by Justin Rose at https://youtu.be/g-Lk0kn85_4

There are a number of sources out there with various prices. In my opinion, at this time for someone looking for a change due it is a good choice. I have a problem with the backswing wabbling and not getting the club face back to the ball with the center of the club face at the ball. With all the training I have received I find this club the easiest and more stable during the backswing. The lighter ‘Joey’ blade model fits my eye well and I have reasonable distance control. The biggest improvement in my putting with this equipment is getting the ball on line.

I would recommend this product but it is the owner’s choice in the various models available (don’t just get Justin’s because he is a pro) based on your preference in the style from a blade to a large mallet like Justin’s.

Good luck by supporting the Greatest Game Ever…..

Stategies High Handicappers Should Learn

Thanks to Kellie Stenzel and Golf.com I have found an article that should help new and struggling players improve their game. I know that when I met Kellie at Keiser University as a Guest Instructor I got a very good pointer. Here is an article that she published which is really great advise:

10 Stategies Low Handicappers know that High Handicappers don’t

This article give good course management tips, good tips on the golf swing and good advise about instruction. It also links several other articles on Golf.com which are even greater benefit to those wanting to learn the game.

IS YOUR DRIVER THE CORRECT LENGTH?

There are a significant number of studies out there that have discussed the driver length. Recently my friends at GolfWRX issued an article on that subject. It would be better to discuss if speed (which translates to greater speed) is worth the losing control (which translates to accuracy). By personal experience I have found that searching the correct head and shaft is much better that the speed. I have searched and modified my drivers to a controlable length (personal = 44.5″). That length has also included additional changes in the shaft weight which has also affected the swingweight. For more reading on the subject I would suggest the following GolfWRX article:

IT MIGHT BE A GOOD IDEA TO CUT DOWN YOUR DRIVER

Finding a good club fitter and repair technician would give you a good start on the potential cost of the upgrade. You can search further information from may of the forum sites around. I can also be contacted relative to how deep you wish to research the topic and I will give send you resources for some of the best reference materials available.

Does your practice swing help you?

The connection between your mind and your body has always been a great point of emphasis in golf. Lately one of my greatest instructors, Dr. T.J. Tomasi, currently at Keiser University in Palm Beach Florida, reminded me that there are some very special connections between the mind and the body. He reminds us that your last and greatest impression on your mind in advance of your next stroke is that Practice Swing. The special point here is that the Practice Swing must be the same full Stroke that you intend to execute on the actual shot to be taken. The cannot be a partial, slow motion swing without the commitment of the shop you are about to take.

Read the following link for better explanation of your best opportunity for shot success:

Let the Tracer be your Teacher

The image implanted in your mind with this swing though is the best asset to complete your actual stroke as intended.

HOW DOES YOU DRIVING DISTANCE COMPARE?

Comparative golf information is always being presented which is got some very interesting outcomes. Thanks to the gentlemen from GoflWRX I recently found an article which has some very interesting results. I can only assume that the information is gleaned from a data base which is actually based on fact. My only question is the distribution of the subject golfers based on index. I know for sure, by past experience, that there are golfer across the index range that use the quoted equipment. I would hope that a good statistical representation has been used to back up the information.

If you want to delve deeper into the facts and details of the study and information click on the following link:

The Average Driving Distance for Male Amateur Golfers by Age

This is one of the better articles but I am outside the information listed. Not having used the equipment quoted but watching my playing stats my golfing and physical age just don’t match.

FITSPATRICK VS DECHAMBEAU ON GOLF SKILLS

The latest argument in the golf world is about the ‘bomb and gouge’ players vs the traditionalist. Compare the stories from both sides of the pond about golf and some of the biggest names.

European Tour player Matthew Fitzpatrick’s comments on Bryson DeChambeau set off the first round. We have seen an upward trend of greater distance and statistically better play and these two are at the forefront right now. As you remember when Tiger Woods hit the golf stage there was a major change in the. Similar changes have been seen prior to that with great names in the game appearing include, but not limited to the likes of Palmer, Nickols, Jones & Hagen. There are many changes and variables which have occurred and depending on which learning you have will put you on the variable sides of the fence.

Distance has always been a good thing. Being able to use a wedge instead of a mid oer long iron has always been preferable. Link that with a good short game and the golfer surpasses everyone. The players ability to understand his game and what makes it the greatest set each player apart. For now the distance increase by DeChambeau is pushing him toward the front of the pack. Increasing the various points of his game will make him better.

My coaches and teachers have always told me that there are a number of adages which over the long run will prevail. From the ranks of the Professional golfers of the world the “Drive for Show and Putt for Dough” is the most prolific. The golf gods have a way of working around every aspect of the game and teach each of us our place in the game.

Keep you stats, practice your game and have fun will make this game better for all.

ARE GOLF BALLS HARMING YOUR GAME?

Update Aug 17, 2021: Here I have updated work by the MyGolfSpy group relating to their golf ball analysis. The tweaked the research by narrowing the parameter of the balls examined and restricted the scope of the analysis to Drivers, 8-irons and wedges. There did however keep the same swing speed analysis for the robotic testing of 115, 100 and 85 mph. There is also a report on the variables they used for the irons and wedges contained within the report. Below is the link to their 2021 report.

https://mygolfspy.com/best-golf-balls-2021/

I would say the results are very complete and should be a great help the golfing community. In my personal experience I find that their work is on the money with data. I have seen consistent results in my game. The only thing I found in the article that the reader should be aware of is the selectable  results table near the end of the report. Here you much have the last 2 drop down lists read “Wedge” to the the results. See picture below.

2021 Ball Test Annotated

Interactive Chart at report end

If you work your way through the report and look at the graphics included, every golfer should have a better idea of what ball their should be using. Personally, I have found that the Titleist Tour Speed Ball is the best for my game but I am encouraged by this test to at least try the other balls noted and see if there is any improvement in my game. Like the reports show, each has it pros and cons and a good examination of your game will help you on the course and in the pro shop.

Best of Luck to all who takes advantage. Supporting the Greatest Game Ever…

Original: My friends at MyGolfSpy have again hit a home run for the evaluation of golf balls. This study is way overdue and every golfer needs to understand what the report says so that they can help their game in a similar way we change clubs to help our game.
